Agricultural Institute of Slovenia is a public research institution founded in 1898. Its present founder is the Government of the Republic of Slovenia. The founder must also agree about the appointment of Institute’s director, gives the final approval of annual work programme and other important documents.
The status of a public research institution implies a governmental non-profit making institution with defined activities in the sense of public service. In frame of its registered activity the Institute carries out the following tasks:

-
Expert projects defined by laws,
-
Advising, studies and laboratory service,
-
Supervision and verification of quality of agricultural products and products used for agriculture,
-
Publication of findings and results of research, expert and control work.
Its results are published in scientific and expert magazines, in reports to contracting partners or in its own publications issued in series entitled “Raziskave in studije” (Investigations and Studies), “Prikazi in informacije” (Presentations and Information) and “Tehnoloski list” (Technological Leaflet).
The number of persons employed at the Institute is 175, of whom 84 are researchers. Among them, approximately one half has completed one of the post-graduate studies abroad or at home (Masters of Science, Doctors of Science). The prevailing age group among the researchers ranges between 30 and 40 years.
The Agricultural Institute of Slovenia is organised in the following departments:

Library, technical services and car pool belong to the administrative body of the Institute.
The prevailing part of the research and expert work is done in modern equipped laboratories and in experimental fields and plantations. The most important among them are: Experimental Farm for Field, Fodder and Vegetable Crops in Jablje near Trzin, Potato Selection Centre in Moste near Komenda, Experimental Orchard in Brdo near Lukovica and Test Station for Apiculture in Senično near Golnik. The breeding work is focussed on traditional Slovene products: potato, grasses, clovers and vegetables, among which there are several registered varieties owned by the Institute.
The structure of financial sources predetermined for specific purposes presents the following picture (average of the past few years):
Foundation financing ........................................... 15-20 %
