Expert and research work of Plant Protection Department (PPD) is based on the following guidelines:

  • identification, inventarisation, geographic distribution of harmful organisms,
  • biodiversity of harmful organisms, their relation between species and the relation towards other factors,
  • plant protection and its consequences.

RESEARCH WORK

Plant Protection Department participates in the activities of two programs:

  • Sustainable agriculture
  • Agrobiodiversity

Major topics of the research work are:

  • geographic distribution of different harmful organisms,
  • influence of environmental factors on the population dynamics of harmful organisms,
  • application and introduction of various detection and identification methods for fungi, viruses, viroids, bacteria and nematodes (RT-PCR, PCR, PHASTSystem, microscopic image analysis , transmission electron microscopy, real-time PCR, immuno-electron microscopy, immunofluorescence assay, Biolog system),
  • influence of harmful organisms on their hosts,
  • host - vector - pathogen interactions,
  • environment friendlier ways of harmful organism control and other.

EXPERT WORK

PPD participates in survey and monitoring of quarantine organisms. The surveillance of harmful organisms is based on Act on Plant Health (ZZVR-1-Official Gazette of the Republic of Slovenia, No. 45/01), International Agreement on Sanitary and Phytosanitary measures (WTO) and International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC). This work is based on expert examinations, monitoring, systematic research and other methods and is based on three main segments:

  • diagnosis, in frame of which laboratory analyses for the presence of viruses, bacteria, fungi, insects and nematodes are made, various diagnostic techniques are developed and introduced, and the collection of antibodies, pathogens and test plants for the diagnostic work is maintained.
  • support to official organ, in frame of which the PPD participates in the pest risk analysis, prepares expert opinions, reports and publications and monitors the appearance and spreading of quarantine organisms in Slovenia.
  • forecasting and warning service for pests and diseases which uses field observations of growth stages for major agricultural plants, monitoring of economically important harmful organisms, meteorological data measurements and other data. The collected data combined with some forecasting models are used for warnings and plant protection recommendations.
Special attention has been paid to following organisms:
  • viruses - analyses of samples in frame of special surveillance and monitoring: Plum pox potyvirus (PPV), Apple chlorotic leafspot trichovirus (ACLV), Tomato rinspot nepovirus (TRSV), Beet necrotic yellow vein benyvirus (BNYVV), Prunus necrotic ringspot ilarvirus (PNRSV), Prune dwarf ilarvirus (PDV), Raspberry bushy dwarf idaeovirus (RBDV), nepoviruses of grapevine and other laboratory analyses of viruses and viroids,
  • bacteria - monitoring and determination of the presence of Erwinia amylovora, identification of certain Gram negative bacteria (Agrobacterium vitis, A. tumefaciens, Xanthomonas campestris pv. campestris and other bacteria from genera Erwinia, Xanthomonas, Pseudomonas) and bacterium diseases on bean (X. campestris pv. phaseoli, Pseudomonas syringae pv. syringae, P. syringae pv. phaseolicola),
  • fungi - laboratory analyses of Colletotrichum acutatum, Puccinia horiana, Didymella ligulicola, Monilinia species, Phytophthora fragariae and other species of the genus Phytophtora in woody plants, fungi of the genus Fusarium and their mycotoxins and systematic survey of Monilinia fructicola and Phytophthora ramorum,
  • insects – systematic surveillance of western corn rootworm, Diabrotica virgifera virgifera, aphids in potato,
  • nematodes – laboratory analyses in frame of special surveillance and monitoring of Globodera rostochiensis, G. pallida, Bursphelenchus xylophilus and analyses of other important nematodes (Ditylenchus dipsaci, Xiphinema americanum, X. index, Meloidogyne chitwoodi, M fallax, Aphelenchoides besseyi etc.).

SERVICE ACTIVITY AND PROJECTS AS A RESULT OF SPECIAL CONTRACTS AND ORDERS

1. Phytopharmacy
Biological tests of plant protection products are carried out.

2. Advisory work
Together with other members of Plant Protection Service we transmit our knowledge to the growers in the form of consultations with advisers, technologists and producers and as talks on different meetings.

3. Identification of harmful organisms
Determinations of plant diseases, pests and weeds (plant species) are carried out, answers to problems are given and protection measures are recommended.
